If you’re thinking of getting backyard chickens, it’s likely that you have considered if your local council has any restrictions on keeping a small flock of chickens. Any regulations enforced by your council are created to keep all residents happy, so the neighbourly thing to do would be to check that these rules are that you need to adhere to.
How many chickens can I keep?
Councils vary in terms of the number of chickens that are allowed in the standard suburban backyard. Most Councils are happy with 6 or fewer chickens, with a permit required for a greater number. For most families, around six chickens are adequate in terms of their egg production, producing around 3 dozen eggs per week. Some Councils such as the Brisbane City Council, allow a greater number of chickens if you have a larger backyard. In this instance, if your property is less than 800m2, you can keep a maximum of 6 chickens, compared with up to 20 chickens if your property is greater than 800m2. There are some Councils such as the Logan City Council, which do not allow chickens to be kept on properties with an area of less than 600m2. Interestingly it seems that each council has their own rules that will vary to some degree with some allowing slightly more or slightly fewer chickens on different sized parcels of land. If you’re planning on getting some chickens, a quick call to your local council is a good idea so you’re sure to be keeping within their suggested guidelines.
Are roosters allowed?
Another very common rule is that there are to be no roosters. As roosters are not necessary in making eggs (you’d be surprised that many people think they are necessary to produce eggs) and often cause a disturbance to the neighbours, most councils ban roosters from the suburban backyard. If you live in a more rural area with your closest neighbours some distance away, a rooster may be allowed if it’s unlikely to cause a disturbance. In this instance, I would suggest that you call your local council or have a look at their website to see if roosters are permitted. Some allow roosters as long as the neighbours don’t complain about the crowing.
Placement and type of Chicken House
One of the key concerns of local councils is to make sure backyard chickens do not become a problem to your neighbours. One of the problems can be the smell that comes from fixed chicken houses. Unlike mobile chicken coops, which can be moved around to different areas of the backyard, those coops that are fixed in one area often result a build up of chicken manure. As such, councils often have some quite specific specifications on the placement of a fixed chicken coop in terms of the distance it is placed to neighbouring fences. An easy way to avoid this restriction in your backyard, it to purchase or make a mobile coop. Mobile coops allow chickens to work their manure into the soil, making it perfect for your next vegetable patch and minimizes any odour that would otherwise result.
Keeping away mice
It’s unlikely your neighbours will appreciate mice or rats creeping into their backyard due to poorly stored chicken feed in your backyard. Councils therefore strongly encourage owners of backyard chickens to make sure that their chicken feed is stored appropriately so as to not attract rats or mice. Unlike other animals, chickens cannot overeat. Therefore there is no need to give them breakfast, lunch and dinner but rather serve their feed in a self-feeder that they can access throughout the day. Scattering food on the ground attracts rodents and wild birds. Obtaining a good feeder and storage container for your feed is important.
Doing the ‘right’ thing by your council and your neighbours is important when keeping chickens. You would be surprised by the number of people who are not even aware their neighbours have chickens, as they store their feed securely, they keep a suitable number of chickens, and there is no odour or noise (apart from the gentle clucking) coming from their backyard.
I saw an article the other day on how newlyweds should plan a budget. I had to laugh when it had a column for discretionary spending. If the couple using the plan are like most newlyweds I know, there is no money for discretionary spending. In fact, there is often not enough money to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, but maybe things are different now than several decades ago when I got married straight out of high school.
Whether or not you have money left for what is referred to as discretionary spending, the shaky economic times we live in should cause all of us to be careful how we spend the money that we do have, and to look for ways to cut back on spending whenever possible.
Below are a few ways that have helped me a lot over the years.
1. Plan ahead.
I have a dry-erase board with a calendar on it, in our bedroom. A strange place to keep it, I know, but it reminds me first thing every morning about anything important I need to do that day, any item I need to purchase, or any payment that needs to be made during the month.
Food is one of the most expensive things in most of our budgets. That’s why I try to plan meals ahead for the whole month. That way, I can buy in bulk and even pre-prepare and freeze a number of the meals at one time, not only saving money but also time. If I don’t have the day’s menu planned out ahead of time, I am much more likely to say, “Why don’t we run down to MacDonald’s or order in a pizza.” Of course it is okay to put a few trips to MacDonald’s in your budget or plan for pizza now and then, but doing it on the spur of the moment rather than writing it into a plan almost guarantees that it will become more frequent than you intended it to be.
Clip coupons for things you use regularly. I have friends who say they don’t have time to waste clipping coupons, but monthly, my coupon clipping saves more than they get paid for working several hours. I don’t spend much time searching for coupons. I just clip them as I run across them in my regular reading of the daily newspaper. If I don’t, it feels like I’m throwing real cash in the garbage.
2. Buy Used Things Whenever Possible
I don’t even know what a new book costs these days, but the last time I looked, they were $8.95 and up. My sister tells me that she buys 3-6 new books every time she goes grocery shopping. Most of my friends and I exchange books with each other so that 4 or 5 of us read every book that enters the group.
We often buy the books from a used book outlet to begin with so that makes our savings mount up even more. If there is a new book that we are all interested in, we keep an eye out for it at the local thrift shop.
Clothing, especially for children, is another thing you can save a lot of money on by buying used. Much of the used clothing for children in resale shops has been used very little because children grow out of their clothes quickly.
Craigslist, online, offers just about anything you can imagine free or at a very reasonable cost. My daughter found very nice desks for her two daughters this way-free except for hauling, which she ended up getting her parents (us) to do for her so you can see she came out very well on this deal.
3. Make gifts instead of buying them.
I always feel sad around Christmas when I see people wearing themselves out shopping for something that “will do” for Aunt Joan or Uncle George. Why not start now, using your sewing talent, or beading, or painting talents to create a nice inexpensive gift for those people you plan to give a gift to, and save all the hassle when Christmas season actually does roll around.
4. Use common sense when entertaining.
A friend of mine complained the other day that she had spent nearly $100 on chips, dips, and drinks for an evening they had invited 3 couples to. Does entertaining always have to involve expensive food? Why not a simple plate of home-made cookies and some coffee or sodas? It’s like everyone is trying to outdo the last person who entertained, but it really isn’t necessary. Maybe, if you dared to be different, the others would breathe a sign of relief and thank you for it.
5. Switch to store brands.
Yes, there are some brand names that many of us just won’t give up, no matter what; but there are other things where you can’t tell the difference so why not give them a try? Saving 29 cents on a can of soup by switching to the store brand doesn’t seem like a lot until you multiply it by the total number of cans you purchase in any given month.
There are lots of other ways you can save without it cutting into your life style at all. Be on the lookout for them, and see if you can’t come up with a little more money to use for that discretionary spending the budget people always tell us about.

Here are some tips that you can put into place to help budget your hard earned cash
Tip #1: Opening a savings account or a term deposit bank account is quite popular these days, however with term deposit accounts you must ensure that you can meet the required minimum monthly deposit or you Will forfeit your interest rates that were agreed on when opening this account.
Tip #2: Working out where you should spend your money, wants and needs are two different things entirely, if you can draw the line between wants and needs you really can start saving money a lot quicker, for example that sexy dress you would love to purchase is not a necessity when you already have a wardrobe full of dresses.
Tip #3: Setting goals will go a long way to helping you learn to budget your money, for example rather than purchasing a new television with your next pay cheque is not going to help, if you set a goal to purchase this television in 1 month or even 2 months time, not only will this ensure that you still have extra money each week this will also teach you the art of financial discipline.
Making small personal goals and sticking to them even if they are small goals at first you can then implement this theory into larger ideas, you will gain much more than just financial discipline you will also gain self satisfaction from what you have accomplished.
